It just gets worse

The stars can see Biloxi
The stars can find their faces in the sea
And we're walking in the evening by the ocean
We are splashing naked in the water
And the sky is red from off towards New Orleans
And the sky is red from off towards New Orleans

-Ted Hawkins

One one hand, I simply can not understand how such a thing can happen in the United States.

On the other hand, I walk around my city during work and think how easily anarchy could rise here. I have been increasingly discouraged with the violence and death on the news this summer - just in my metro area. Poverty, ignorance, and despair run rampant in Philadelphia too.

We have failed our country. I mean all of us, not just the government. As we grow increasingly divided into bipartisan factions, the backbone of this country is crumbling. Even now, while people are actively suffering, the blame game has started.

I wish I have a solution. I don't. Right now, I'm just trying to understand.

If you haven't read this, it is a blog from someone inside New Orleans right now.

Well put. This "backbone" is crumbling because for 25 years conservatives have gutted governmnet and portraye dit as evil and have promoted the survival of the fittest and every man for themself attitude.
